Following a long and successful career as an orthopaedic surgeon, Srirangam Mohankumar focused on his lifelong passion for art. His particular specialisation has been in watercolour painting. In this area he shows an instinctive mastery of skill and economy which was soon recognised, appreciated and rewarded in the academic world.
Kumar uses a direct technique which has been compared to that of Winslow Homer, after a recent annual marine exhibition at the Mall Gallery. His choice of subject matter is varied and includes the international locations in which he has observed light, colour and movement. He has exhibited in various UK galleries and his reputations as a leading watercolourist is now well established. Over the years he has been inspired by the painters of the past, notably, John Singer Sergeant, Edward Seago and John Yardley.
He is a member of the Federation of British Artists and an Associate Member of The Royal Society of Marine Artsists.
He gives demonstrations of his ‘en plein air’ technique to groups of aspiring artists and teaches at residential courses. In their 100th year, Lytham Art Society elected him as their president. Kumar is also the first Patron of the Lytham Art Society.
Kumar, through his sales, supports a number of charities which include Feet First, Northwest Air Ambulance, Sick Children Great Ormond Street and Lytham St Annes RNLI.
